The Indian infantry soldier is not only the toughest in combat, but also the most combat-ready in the world. Infantry regiments engage and destroy the enemy in close combat during the assault or maintain their position during defense. They are equipped, organized and trained to use short-range combat weapons to support their assault weapons with heavier fire and provide limited administrative support to units belonging to the regiments. The Infantry Regiment is the most important element of an infantry division. This is a military organization, not a field training program. Not all battalions of an infantry regiment fight in a single formation, but are scattered across different formations such as brigades, divisions and corps.
